Cocoa Value Chain Examined by Local Stakeholders
The Philippines’ first international cocoa conference held recently in Davao City drew over 800 attendees. The Philippines has great potential to increase its cocoa production and cater to the growing demand for fermented cocoa bean in regional markets.
Philippines 2020 Cocoa Challenge
Efforts are under way to increase production through the Philippines 2020 Cocoa Challenge, which envisions farmers planting 7 million cocoa seedlings every year through 2020.
The Kakao Konek International Cocoa Conference addressed the obstacles and opportunities to meeting this challenge.
Cocoa Value Chain Actors Come Together
The conference was organized by Cacao Industry Development Association of Mindanao, Inc., (CIDAMi) and ACDI/VOCA through the USDA-funded CoCoPal project. The CoCoPal program works to improve the cocoa, coconut and rice value chains and help farmers produce food and income sustainably.
The event brought together cocoa industry players, including farmers, nursery operators, traders, plant breeders, and other local, national, and regional stakeholders in the cocoa industry.
The event featured a cacao-based culinary event and a farm tour, and it gave buyers and sellers a chance to meet and do business.
Cacao-Coconut Integration
In a message to cocoa industry stakeholders during the conference, Provincial Governor Corazon Malayaon laid out a plan for the province of Davao Oriental, which is the biggest producer of coconut in the Philippines. The aim will be to integrate cocoa in the coconut plantations. The provincial government will fund planting of cocoa that will cover 2,020 hectares to be managed by 1,115 households through the Davao Oriental Village Cacao Plantation Model Project.
“This is just a start—we can go a high as 200,000 hectares,” said Malayaon. “The provincial government of Davao Oriental is committed to supporting the Philippines cocoa industry development.”
