Livestock management basically has three branches which include; extensive livestock management, semi-intensive management, intensive management. Historically, the major problems facing livestock industry in Nigeria are insufficient funding from the federal government, problems of predators such as theft from the outsider, wide animals etc.
With the growing population of the Nigerian state, animal production is also expected to grow in this magnitude so as to meet the needs of the nation, where there will be availability of meat, milk, egg, and etc. for human consumption as well as manure for crop production.
In livestock management, plants are used for management, and these are the same animals whose faeces are used as manures in crop production. Hence, the money that the federal government will spend on the fertilizer will drastically reduce. In livestock management, livestock production has contributed in keeping Nigerians well and healthy being a major source of protein, even as it contributed consistently to the advancement of food for all policy. This is actually one among other economic importance of livestock management.
Furthermore, majority of the shoes, belts, we see everywhere are made out of the animal production which is a sub sector under livestock management. So it is glaring that if our livestock are well managed there is every tendency that we will experience absolute growth in the nation both in economy and social wise. The sadden thing that broke my heart is that, in spite of the contribution it has made socially and economically to the growth of the Nigeria state, the Federal Government has not given adequate attention to the sub-sector of the agricultural sector.
Moreover, much of what we enjoy today is as a result of the animal production. But, many Nigerian who are into animal production lack the knowledge of livestock management. With little grants and loans, they are not bothered to go about the business in commercial dimension because they do not have what it takes, of which they will not know where to invest in or a body of knowledge that can help them on how to go about livestock management. However, livestock industry has indeed contributed immensely to the government policy of food for all, there are some challenges facing the industry, and the way forward is far from what the federal government thought toward this sector of the economy since it has reiterated its readiness to diversify Nigerian economy.
However, it is glaring that agriculture will command a lot of attention; hence, I would advise the government to encourage the youths more in agriculture business by way of inducement, by that, I mean creating attentive conditions such as empowering the youths on how to go about crop production and most importantly on livestock management which will help boost up the country’s commercial production reason being that our forefathers, grandfather, even our fathers are not educated on livestock management which is making our country to be behind globally. But, if the federal government can empower the youths with adequate training which will be of a global standard, I assure the government will see changes in the economic sector.
In conclusion, the youths should be updated with modern techniques on how to run the livestock business, in fact, the federal government can sponsor their trip to go for training outside the country and at the conclusion of their trainings they should engage them in the livestock industry. And I believe within a short period of time agriculture which is the only promising sector will help boost the Nigeria’s economic status and most importantly we will be recognized for our outstanding production worldwide.
