Abuja, Nigeria --- MININGREVIEW.COM --- 08 November 2011 - Nigerian Senate Committee on Solid Minerals chairman Abdullahi Adamu says that ‒ following visit to Australia by President Goodluck Jonathan to discuss mining issues ‒ the Federal Government is now focusing its attention on solid mineral resources. He explained that this was why the President had gone to Australia with a high powered team for in-depth discussions with the Australian Government, which was well known for its expertise in mining. The intention was to come home and focus on developing a thriving solid mineral, resources industry, said Adamu. Earlier, executive director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council David Adulugba noted that the council’s decision to collaborate with the private sector Progressive Miners’ Empowerment Association to host a forum underscored the importance the council attached to the need for the diversification of the national economy, which has been dependent on oil over the years. According to him, the non-oil sector of the Nigerian economy has the potential of competing favourably, if not more effectively than the oil sector. “For this reason the council created the Solid Minerals Unit to map out significant development programmes and projects for the solid mineral sector. This would help Nigeria to earn revenue for the nation through royalties and foreign exchange,” he said.
