Benue state has commenced exportation of yams to European countries with the first batch to United Kingdom weighing 19.8 metric tons. The state Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Donald Gbugho, who made this known in Zaki-Biam - the town believed to be the largest producer of yam in the state, has also urged farmers to take advantage of the development to increase their production. He explained that the exportation of the yams was made possible by Xeggs Nigeria Limited through the Nigerian Export Promotion Council and therefore called on other interested companies to key into the abundant opportunities of Benue agricultural produce to do business with the state. According to him, the ready market for Benue yams would ameliorate the plight of the farmers who lose huge sums of money on yearly basis in the past due to the rot of their farm produce as a result of inadequate storage, processing facilities and good market. Gbugho further appealed to potential investors in the agriculture sector in the country to explore available opportunities in yam, cassava, soya bean, beni-seed and citrus to boost their businesses and to develop the state. He advised the farmers to form cooperative groups to enable them capture regional markets so that the state would continue to tower as the food basket of the nation and indeed the food basket of Africa.
