AGRIC ASSOCIATIONS BEMOAN LACK OF GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR AGRO COMMODITIES
Associations from across the prominent agro commodity value chains have charged the Nigerian Government to extend more fiscal and mechanization support to farmers.
The leaders of the various associations made the charge at the Farm2Fork Dialogue holding in Ilorin, Kwara State.
President of the Cocoa Association of Nigeria, Princess Roseline Ibitoye, in her speech said that the Cocoa industry has been neglected by past and present governments, adding that there is a need to put the cash crop back on track from when it was the leading agro commodity in the country.
She said, “Cocoa has been in existence before the advent of Crude Oil, but the Government has taken its focus away from this vital cash crop”
She also added that within the next two years, agribusinesses in cocoa with the needed support would experience a large boom, as the association is working round the clock to ensure the actualization of this motive.
Meanwhile, Vice President of the National Banana and Plantain Growers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NABPAN), Olatunbosun Borode, stated that the Banana and Plantain value chain has been bereft of recognition in the agriculture sector, while also clamoring for a ban in the importation of the commodity’s end products.
“The Government needs to ensure that it utilizes the banana and plantain sub-sector, and put an end to the importation of banana’s end products such as cosmetics and wines.” He added.
The National President of the Kolanut and Bitter Kola Association of Nigeria, Chief Sunday Osifeso also decried the neglect of the commodity by the government, while also appealing for support to boost the Kolanut and Bitterkola businesses in Nigeria.
He said, “Kolanut is been used in our industry especially for beverages. Bitter kola has its own medicinal advantage, and both products have been neglected by the Nigerian government. There are lots of benefits we can derive from these two products but we want the government to work towards our aid and gain more from these commodities.”
Director of State Coordination, Federation Of Agricultural Commodity Associations of Nigeria (FACAN), Yusuf Hamis also decried the lack of modern mechanization in Nigeria’s agriculture system. Adding, he said, “The challenge with Nigeria’s Agriculture begins from the farm because the farmers do not have enough equipment needed to ensure efficient production.
